Believe it or not, MTV is celebrating its 35th anniversary, and the network remains as relevant as ever. Now, it's easy (and very tempting) to get snarky and joke about that idea: MTV's relevance. After all, this is a "music television" channel that has long abandoned the music in favor of niche programming geared toward a very specific audience. But there is no arguing that MTV shows have had a significant impact on society, from introducing countless young people to LGBT issues to doggedly promoting the importance of voting.
